Canada's 1997 Stamp Program

From Canada Post's Philatelic News Release 22-96. Some web links are provided to reference commemorated people and events, etc., so you can learn about them in advance!

This news release is no longer completely accurate. A revised Canadian stamp program will be posted with the next Bulletin.

  • A domestic rate stamp to celebrate the Chinese New Year - 1997 will be the Year of the Ox.

  • A new set of Birds stamps, featuring the Western Grebe, the Mountain Bluebird, the Northern Gannet and the Scarlet Tanager. Domestic rate pre-stamped envelopes of the Grebe and Bluebird will be released simultaneously.

  • The tenth stamp in the continuing Masterpieces of Canadian Art series, featuring York Boat on Lake Winnipeg by Walter Phillips.

  • A domestic rate stamp honouring Abbé Charles-Émile Gadbois, to be issued during the Semaine de la Francophonie in March.

  • A single stamp featuring Québec en fleurs, to coincide with the Quebec City horticultural fair in April.

  • A stamp marking the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

  • Canadians in Hollywood will be featured on a set of stamps to be issued to coincide with PACIFIC '97, an international stamp show taking place in San Francisco in late May.

  • A stamp celebrating the opening of Confederation Bridge, the bridge connecting Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

  • A John Cabot stamp, to mark the 500th anniversary of the explorer's historic voyage.

  • Twelve Prominent Canadians, including Réal Caouette, Judy Lamarsh, and Joey Smallwood, will be featured on stamps for Canada Day.

  • A stamp to honour Canadian achievements in Industrial Design, issued to coincide with the Industrial Design conference to be held this summer in Toronto.

  • A stamp to celebrate the Highland Games, to be issued to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Glengarry Highland Games, held in Maxville, Ontario.

  • A set of four Ocean Fish stamps, featuring the Atlantic Sturgeon, the Great White Shark, the Bluefin Tuna and the Pacific Halibut.

  • A stamp to coincide with the World Congress of the Postal, Telegraph and Telephone International, to be held in Montreal in 1997.

  • Be afraid...be very afraid! This year's Stamp Collecting Month, a joint promotion with three other countries, will feature chilling and thrilling characters of the Supernatural.

  • The annual Christmas stamps will feature Madonna and Child.

  • A stamp to mark the 75th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, to be held in Toronto in November.

  • Although many issue dates have not been finalized, the issues are listed in rough chronological order based on current plans. Further details of the 1997 stamp program, including dates of issue and stamp denominations, will be available in Canada's Stamp Details and in separate announcements for each issue.
